More about this Workshop/Service and the Provider
About Inventors & Makers Workshops
Inventors and Makers workshops and classes focus on developing future-proofing 21st-century skills such as problem-solving, creativity and collaboration. It is these skills, so often missed in the busy school day, that will allow our children to thrive in an increasingly digital world.
We run this workshop in schools, museums or libraries. Children are given the support and time to invent, make and collaborate, while being exposed to the tools and resources of the 21st century: for example designing their own app, creating their own short films, building a simple machine, or programming a robot.
The topics of the classes are intentionally broad to encourage flexibility and adaptability, whilst also allowing children to experience a range of new and interesting skills, and perhaps discover a new passion.
What to Expect
In this workshop, children learn about the skills required for effective game design and try their hands at designing several different types of video games using iPad software, but without needing to code.
We go through the skills and understanding required by real game designers. Children learn about game environments and systems, the need for clear rules and objectives, and how games are programmed.
By the end of the workshop, they will have learnt lots of new skills and vocabulary and created at least four different video games. Their games can be shared with parents via an emailed link.
Testimonials
Having Inventors & Makers at Newham Libraries was a brilliant experience. The Stop Motion Animation workshops were engaging, hands-on, and sparked curiosity and creativity - not just in the children, but in the adults who attended too! Susie was fantastic: encouraging, patient, and incredibly skilled at adapting the sessions to suit different group sizes, age ranges, and abilities. She also did a great job of getting adults involved and encouraging families to work together. I’d absolutely recommend other library services to host Inventors & Makers. The sessions are well-structured, fun, and educational, and Susie brings so much energy and flexibility to each one. The booking and communication process was smooth and straightforward. Everything was clearly explained in advance, and both Susie and Laura were responsive and helpful throughout. Over two days, Susie delivered six workshops across six different libraries, and everything from transport between sites to setup ran seamlessly and on time. The best result from the Inventors & Makers workshops was seeing entire families, children and adults, fully engaged and learning together. Susie did a fantastic job of making the activities accessible and inclusive, so everyone felt encouraged to take part. It was lovely to see parents and caregivers getting just as involved as the children, working side by side and sharing ideas. The workshops sparked so much enthusiasm, and it was clear that families left feeling inspired to try similar activities at home.

The booking process was seamless. Excellent communication from beginning to end. Workshops perfectly aligned to the age and stage of the pupils, delivered by an experienced, knowledgeable and enthusiastic leader (ex-teacher) with a genuine passion for education and sharing of knowledge in an engaging way. Highly recommend.

Inventors and Makers facilitated sessions for our families programme at the Battle of Britain Bunker in August 2022. They were wonderful to work with - excellent communication and happy to amend their sessions and resources to fit our themes and needs. The facilitator was great with our families and very knowledgeable. Would highly recommend!
